Today we are talking about one of my favourite topics: failure.
Failure is the #1 thing that keeps people feeling stuck and held back.
But have you ever stopped to think that perhaps failure could be your superpower? By building a relationship with failure and celebrating failure (because it will happen) you will find yourself in a far better position.
So rather than avoiding failure, how about you embrace it and use it to drive yourself forward?
Here’s how!
1. Recognise if you have a fear of failure
The first step is recognising whether you have a fear of failure. Do any of these sound familiar?
You’re in a meeting and you’re struggling to get your voice heard. You know you have something valuable to add, but somethings holding you back from raising your hand.
You’re afraid of people judging you. You worry about what people are thinking about you and the questions you think they’re asking: “why is she doing that job?” or “what makes her think she can do that?”.
You fear public failure. Did you know that men apply for jobs where they can only do 50% of the job description, whereas a women only applies once she knows she can do at least 90%.
You procrastinate. You don’t put yourself forward or engage with potential clients. You don’t show up online because you’re afraid to be seen.
Whatever your reason, the first step is recognising that you have a fear of failure.
2. Reframe your idea of failure
Your fear of failure is costing you thousands of pounds and the future you want.
Failure feels scary and uncomfortable, but reframing your idea of failure will be a total game changer. It’s time to get really clear on your goals. For example, you want to make more money. Good, but not clear enough. Ask yourself WHY. Perhaps you want more money so that you can have more freedom. There’s your true goal. That’s what is driving you.
So get really clear on your goals, because if you are going to do things which feel scary and uncomfortable, if you are going to push yourself out of your comfort zone, if you are going to open yourself up to potential public failure… you’ve gotta fucking want it, right?
This is the answer to curing your fear of failure:
Your desire to achieve your true goal must be GREATER THAN your desire to stay safe.
3. Understand the #1 common misconception about successful people
There’s a perception that high achieving women have never been afraid, or it was easy for them. Wrong. When you look at any successful female, understand that they didn’t get there without fear. The CEO of your company, the entrepreneur you admire online, your high flying boss – they have ALL had a fear of failure. The ONLY difference between you and her is that SHE held hands with the fear of failure and decided to take action anyway.
And that ladies is the recipe for success. If you keep driving towards success using fear as your fuel, if you find out where the edge of your comfort zone is and consistently keep pushing beyond, you WILL BE SUCCESSFUL.
