If you want to learn the exact mindset that you need if you want to quit your job in 2024 and finally take your business full time, read on…
I’ve taken some time to reflect on my own personal journey and the #1 most important lesson is centred around mindset. Yes, strategy is important, but if you haven’t got a rock-solid mindset, foundations and momentum, it’s going to be really difficult to scale your business to a size where you can confidently walk away from your 9-5.
We see so many bold claims online – “quit your 9-5, become a Social Media Manager and earn 5K months”. There are certain things that you NEED to learn before you can expect high income months. Starting a business is not easy. If you’re looking for a get-rich-quick escape from your 9-5, you’re going to be disappointed.
When you’re starting your business, make sure it’s something that you’d be happy to do for free. At the beginning, you’ll be doing things for free often, so you’ve got to fucking love it. Get really clear on whether this business is something you’re passionate about, and not just in for the money.
Some of you might be in this stage currently – LIMBO. So, you’re starting to build your business up, you’re creating content, you’re talk about your business online, you’re helping your first clients… but you’re also in this limbo where you still have to perform in your 9-5 and perhaps your boss is seeing you showing up online and asking questions about your business. What do you do?
I’m going to share my personal journey with you…
I want to preface my experience by explaining that when I started my business, we were in lockdown, so naturally I had no social life and worked from home, which helped a lot. I’d do my certification in the evenings and at the weekend. I went all in, not from a place of hustle or desperation, but from a place of pure excitement. I managed to do a 6 month course in 4 months because I absolutely loved it.
Once I launched and started getting paid clients, that’s when I had all of these extra things to try and fit in my day – client support, client prep, client meetings, as well as content creation, launches, free masterclasses and strategic thinking time.
Here’s what my day would look like…
I would work on my business 6-8am (journalling, strategising, pulling ideas together, creating content. Then I’d start my 9-5 job (I was a Marketing Lead with a team of 6). I’d finish work, go for a walk/ to the gym and then I’d start my clients and do any leftover work. At the time I had 5 clients that I’d see each week. This didn’t feel overwhelming for me at the time, I think because we were in lockdown and I was so driven by excitement and momentum.
The gift of still having a full time job is that you’re not reliant on the money from your business. In the first year of my business, I wasn’t tracking the money I was making – there was zero pressure. I kept reinvesting the money I made in my business and didn’t pay myself a huge salary from it. This meant I built really solid foundations. I invested in photoshoots, my brand, my website. After 3 months, I hired a business coach who taught me how to launch my offers. I really focused on, where are my gaps and what do I need to do to plug them?
I stayed in my 9-5 as long as I physically could. I then received a heads-up that I was going to be made redundant in 6 months, so I stayed for 18 months whilst building my business. As difficult as it was at times, this was a really good amount of time. The longer that you can hold on, the more insurance you have financially and the healthier your business is going to be.
If you are looking to quit your job in 2024 and take your business full time, here are the mindset things you need to look at:
When you have your own business, you will be rejected time and time again. When rejection becomes emotionally neutral to you, you become unstoppable. When it knocks you, that’s going to halt your success. So ask yourself, where is this fear of rejection coming from? Take some time to work through this. If you don’t know how to do this, send me a message.
It’s exactly the same if you have a fear of failure. This is something that needs to be addressed, because in your business you’ll fail time and time again. If you fear failure, it’s going to put a massive block on your creativity, testing new things and innovating. Failures always hold a lesson. Last January I did a massive fuck up and lost 15K – but I didn’t take it personally and I learnt the lessons. Stop taking things so personally and see your business as a business. It’s all about testing and learning, testing and learning.
